‘Cultivating mindfulness’: How to draw with charcoal on your iPad using Procreate (Date TBC)

$300.00

This is a two-part, themed course where we explore Charcoal Brushes and techniques in Procreate. During the course of two sessions, we stretch our conception of charcoal in the contemporary digital environment.

Create your own Brush Library: Working with two Brushes only, we will select and move the Vine Brush and the Willow Brush into your own Brush set. We call this Brush set ‘Charcoal Class’. Keeping your current Brushes in one location makes it easy to quickly find and access the precise Brushes you want to work with.

Explore Brush properties: In these short exercises we learn the properties of each Brush - loosening our drawing muscles. We create Layers of lines, swirls, loops, rectangles, circles and ellipses. We draw a set of tonal values with each Brush, exploring the pressure and angle of our Pencil.

Draw a sphere: Drawing a circle and ellipses, we create a line drawing of a sphere - and then fill it with colour, adding tonal shadows. While this may be a simple excercise, the point is to use Procreate functionality along with charcoal qualities.

Review contemporary charcoal artists’ work: Charcoal drawings are traditionally associated with life drawing. But there are so many more applications. We review a selection of contemporary Procreate artists who are using charcoal Brushes for their works.

Draw a still life: We choose a topic or theme to draw. What is our approach to this? How do we plan and create a charcoal drawing. Should we draw this with charcoal Brushes on a white background? Or could we try inverting the process by drawing on a dark background? And how can we use Procreate functionality to do this.

Join me in the these themed sessions where we explore traditional artistic functionality - but digital!
