Celebrating ‘sit and knit’ at Woolarium

Celebrating 10 years of Woolarium

Sit and knit

I was recently commissioned to create this tote bag illustration. The request was from Anna, who owns and manages, ‘Woolarium’, a lovely yarn shop in Northcote, Melbourne. But not only does she sell knitting items, she also has a back room where every Saturday afternoon she hosts a group of knitters.

For the past few years, whenever I visit my sister in Melbourne, she takes me to this ‘sit and knit’ group. We spend a blissful two hours with the other knitters, yarning (literally) and me - sketching.

Over the years, I’ve sketched many Saturday afternoon knitting sessions. I was especially pleased when Anna asked me if I could do a sketch for the Woolarium 10th anniversary tote bag. What a delight and an honour. These were a few preliminary sketches that landed on the cutting room floor:

We’re all pretty happy with the final sketch, which I had drawn in the shop on 10 August 2019. The tote bag and illustration celebrate Slow Art, Woolarium - and all those who knit and shop there. Anna has the final word:

‘We have had a good response to them so far and I’m really pleased to be able to offer something a little different for us that really honours the 10 year anniversary. Thank you for your work!’
